Title Stream Power Index (SPI)
Abstract High-resolution LiDAR-derived topographic data are processed with custom algorithms (Gelder, 2017) to generate a hydrologically-enforced 2 m digital elevation model (DEM) of each HUC 12 level minor watershed. These algorithms result in hydrologically accurate elevation models by removing major impediments to flow such as roads and railroads but maintaining natural depressions such as prairie potholes and sinkholes. Processing settings maintain all depressions deeper than 9 cm (0.5 × root mean square error [RMSE]) or larger than 100 m2, thus maintaining most structural conservation practices such as terraces and water and sediment control basins. SPI is then calculated as SPI = ln(FA * tan(S)) where “FA”= Flow Accumulation and “S”=Slope in radians.
