Section 1: Overview

Originator:Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) - Ecological and Water Resources

Title: Aquatic Invasive Species Observations

Abstract: A multi-partner effort to record the locations of aquatic invasive species in waterbodies throughout the state. Points indicate presence and/or approximate physical locations of the species. Data is downloaded from EDDMapS Midwest (https://www.eddmaps.org/midwest/ ). Data from EDDMapS includes all data previously collected by the Minnesota DNR and uploaded to EDDMapS in 2016. From 2016 forward data from MN DNR staff was collected directly into EDDMapS. EDDMapS also contains data from other organizations and individuals in Minnesota.

Purpose: To provide an inventory of selected invasive aquatic species in waters of the state of Minnesota. A multi-partner effort to collect consistent information. This will provide a planning tool to help identify problem infestations and coordinate an effective response to individual species and locations for prevention and control efforts. This layer is not a complete statewide survey for aquatic invasive species.

Access Constraints: None.

Use Constraints: EDDMapS covers the United States and Canada. Some species are native to Minnesota but not native to other areas. EDDMapS pulls information from a variety of sources, such as herbarium records, so it may contain information on records of species that are native to Minnesota. When DNR distributes the EDDMapS data in ArcMap form, some of those records may be present. Do not use the list of species in this dataset as a definitive list of species that are not native to Minnesota.

Associated Data Sets: Terrestrial Invasive Species Observations

Section 2: Data Quality

Attribute Accuracy: EDDMapS pulls in data from a variety of sources, including research grade reports in iNaturalist. iNaturalist allows reporters to obscure the location of their records, and this can result in low accuracy, i.e. very high numbers in the “CoordAcc – Coordinate Accuracy” field.

Logical Consistency: N/A

Completeness: This layer is not a complete statewide survey for aquatic invasive species.

Horizontal Positional Accuracy: There are multiple origins of this data. The majority of the points were collected using hand-held GPS equipment with accuracy of +/- 15 meters. Some points were generated using the center of the waterbody. Some points were generated using systematically selected locations within water boundaries. An effort was made to prevent the points from overlapping. Also see the field CoordAcc or Coordinate Accuracy.

Vertical Positional Accuracy: Not Applicable

Lineage: Observation data is held by and processed through EDDMapS. MNDNR processes regular downloads from the EDDMapS database. Information on EDDMapS data can be found at https://www.eddmaps.org/tools/.
