Title: Lidar Derived Canopy Height Model, Minnesota

Abstract: The Canopy Height Model (CHM) is a raster dataset (at 1 m spatial resolution) representing the elevation of the highest return within each grid cell to the grid cell center. The CHM is derived from the FUSION CanopyModel which provides for smoothing of the generated surface using a median or mean filter. The algorithm utilizes a technique which preserves the local maxima in the surface while smoothing to force the surface to adhere to the tops of trees. The input data for the CHM model utilizes Minnesota's 3DEP USGS Lidar.

Purpose: The Lidar derived products are used by MN DNR biometrician and partner organizations in various different applications to enhance understanding of forest characteristics in Minnesota.
