Title: DNR Watersheds - DNR Level 01 - HUC 02

Abstract: Back to main DNR Watershed Suite metadata page

These data consist of 4 watershed delineations in one seamless dataset of drainage areas called Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Level 01 Watersheds. DNR Level 01 Watersheds are the largest administrative Minnesota watershed unit delineation existing at the 1st defined level in the Minnesota DNR watershed unit hierarchy.

These modern DNR Level 01 Watersheds are derived from the DNR Catchment base-watershed dataset. These Level 01 watersheds were formerly referred to as DNR Provinces (1-4), but we have discontinued this terminology. Although the lineage of the DNR Province watershed delineations dates back to the early 1970?s, this Level 01 data is an updated version of the DNR Province legacy watershed dataset that has been in existence in various published formats since 1979.

This new linework represents the general appearance of the legacy data. However, the geometry is considerably different. This has resulted from the DNR Watershed Delineation Projects methodology, which incorporates modern data sources to delineate watersheds that reflect the current hydrology and topography of the landscape. These modern DNR Level 01 Watershed delineations have been clipped to the Minnesota state boundary.

Purpose: DNR Level 01 Watersheds are a legacy watershed delineation dataset representing the 1st hydrologic unit level of the DNR watershed hierarchal system.

These watershed delineations are suitable for regional and statewide GIS analysis, database tiling, reference, business reporting, small scale mapping and other business needs associated with hydrologic systems.

These polygons provide a means for organizing land use and related data in a manner which is useful for hydrologic studies and watershed based decision-making.

Time Period of Content Date: 1998 - Present

Currentness Reference: Data have been tested for completeness and attribute coding correctness.

The geometry of this data vary widely as to their currentness. The parent dataset, DNR Catchments, is the maintenance version of the DNR Level 01 Watershed dataset. The user of this data is encouraged to review the metadata entry for the DNR Watersheds Level 08 - All Catchments dataset for more detailed information concerning the currentness of this dataset.

USE CONSTRAINT COMMENTS:

- See Cartographic Lineage, Logical Consistency, Positional Accuracy, and Currentness Reference for further discussion of data capture.

- This data is not the same as the Minnesota DNR Province Watershed legacy data. This modern DNR Level 01 dataset was derived directly from the DNR Catchment layer. The user of this data is encouraged to review the metadata entry for the DNR Watersheds Level 08 - All Catchments dataset for more detailed information.

- The DNR Level 01 Watershed dataset is specific to the state of Minnesota and is not part of the USGS Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD).

Section 2: Data Quality

Attribute Accuracy:

Logical Consistency: This DNR Level 01 Watershed dataset is topologically correct using ArcGIS 10.8. All polygons are closed and lines intersect where intended.

This modern DNR Level 01 Watershed dataset was derived directly from the DNR Catchment layer. It was created by dissolving the DNR Catchments on the 2-digit HUC_02 field so that DNR Catchment linework internal to the four DNR Level 01 Watersheds are removed. The user of this data is encouraged to review the metadata entry for the DNR Watersheds Level 08 - All Catchments dataset for more detailed information.

Completeness: These data are published for November 2023.

Horizontal Positional Accuracy: Source layer wshd_lev01py3: No quantitative studies of horizontal positional accuracy exist for the data. Although positional accuracy of watershed delineations can be arbitrary, accuracy of these data can be reasonably estimated based on the characteristics of all source materials and processing techniques to be 100 feet (30 meters) from correct position.

Vertical Positional Accuracy: Source layer wshd_lev01py3: No quantitative studies of vertical positional accuracy exist for the data.
