Section 1: Overview

Originator:Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) - Ecological and Water Resources

Title: Listed Infested Waters

Abstract: These are water bodies (lakes, streams/rivers, wetlands) listed as infested with any of these aquatic invasive species:

  • bighead carp

  • Brazilian waterweed

  • brittle naiad

  • Eurasian watermilfoil

  • faucet snail

  • flowering rush

  • grass carp

  • New Zealand mud snail

  • red swamp crayfish

  • round goby

  • ruffe

  • silver carp

  • spiny waterflea

  • starry stonewort

  • viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS)

  • white perch

  • zebra mussel

  • The DNR will add a lake, river, pond or wetland to the infested waters list if it contains an aquatic invasive species that could spread to other waters. The DNR may also list a lake, river, pond or wetland as infested if it is connected to a body of water where an aquatic invasive species is present.

The list on the DNR website, not this GIS layer, is the official record of the infested waters list for MN. For more information, see the official infested waters list at: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/invasives/ais/infested.html

NOTE: As of Jan. 2017, this layer is ~ 98% complete. Several rivers, streams, and creeks are missing from this layer. Lake Superior tributaries may not display correctly.

Purpose: To provide a comprehensive, statewide layer to identify Minnesota's listed infested waters to meet DNR business needs, including mapping, analysis, reporting, statutory responsibilities, etc.

Associated Data Sets: Features derived from:
DNR Hydrography - Lakes and Open Water
DNR Hydrography - Stream Routes with Kittle Numbers and Mile Measures

Species data comes from a database maintained by the Invasive Species program (DNR Ecological and Water Resources Division)

    Section 2: Data Quality

    Attribute Accuracy:

    Logical Consistency:

    Completeness: Data exist statewide.

Horizontal Positional Accuracy: Horizontal positional accuracy is based originally on the 100K USGS source quadrangles. Polygons for managed waters have been improved by on-screen digitizing using DOQs and FSA imagery.

    Vertical Positional Accuracy: N/A

Lineage: The lake polygons are derived from DNR Hydrography - All Water Features.
Stream features are derived from Streams with Kittle Numbers and Mile Measures.

    Table Detail:
    Listed Infested Waters
    Field NameValid ValuesDefinitionDefinition Source
    waterbodyname
    -
Name of the lake, river, stream, or stream segment that is listed as infested.
    counties
    -
The county or counties in Minnesota in which the water body is located. May be listed as “Multiple Counties”.
    commonname
    -
The common name of the invasive species with which the water body is listed as infested. Common names in this field correspond to naming conventions used by EDDMapS Midwest.
    designateddate
    -
The year in which the water body was first listed as infested by the DNR.
    confirmdate
    -
The year in which the water body was first confirmed to contain the invasive species. If this field is blank or <Null>, the DNR has not confirmed the presence of the invasive species in this water body.
    connectednote
    -
Denotes if a water body is listed as infested because it is connected to another water body. This field should have content when “confirmdate” is blank or <Null>.
    dowlknum
    -
The 8-digit “DOW number,” an identifying number for lakes. DOW stands for the former DNR Division of Waters. If this field is blank or <Null>, the water body is likely a pond or wetlands that is not on the public waters inventory, or a river or stream. Some major river pools do have a DOW number.

    subjectnumber
    -
An index number used by EDDMapS Midwest that corresponds to the species for which the water body is listed as infested.
    downumber
    -
The 6-digit “DOW number,” an identifying number for lakes. DOW stands for the former DNR Division of Waters. If this field is blank or <Null>, the water body is likely a pond or wetlands that is not on the public waters inventory, or a river or stream. Some major river pools do have a DOW number.
