Forest Health Survey 2016, Minnesota
Abstract:
This dataset shows where largescale tree damage was delineated in aerial surveys in 2016. Forests in much, but not all, of northern Minnesota were surveyed, as well as far southeastern Minnesota. Only forest disturbances were mapped if they were occurring at the time of the flight, and flights primarily occurred in late June and July. The following were the most common disturbers, listed from largest area disturbed to smallest area disturbed: spruce budworm, eastern larch beetle, wind, larch casebearer, aspen decline, forest tent caterpillar, flooding, emerald ash borer, jack pine budworm, and twolined chestnut borer.
Purpose:
The purpose of this survey is to indicate where significant and highly noticeable tree defoliation and mortality occurred. Another purpose of these surveys is to monitor general trends in forest health conditions (previous years' aerial survey data is available through the Forest Health unit of the MNDNR).

The northern 2/3 of Minnesota as well as the southeast corner were surveyed. Specifically, all or most of the forests in the following counties were surveyed: AITKIN, BECKER, BELTRAMI, CARLTON, CASS, CLEARWATER, COOK, CROW WING, HOUSTON, HUBBARD, ITASCA, KOOCHICHING (not the eastern two-thirds), LAKE, LAKE OF THE WOODS, MAHNOMEN, MORRISON, OTTER TAIL, ROSEAU, ST. LOUIS (not the N.W. quarter) , TODD, WADENA, WINONA

Attribute Accuracy:
Attribute table values are recorded in flight and double-checked afterward for any obvious errors and to ensure consistency. Some polygons were created from ground surveys after flights.

Caveats about this dataset:
- Many tree problems cannot be identified from aircraft. For example, Armillaria root disease, eastern dwarf mistletoe, and oak wilt are three examples of major forest disturbers that are not included in aerial survey.
- Most polygons are not ground-truthed
- Affected locations (polygons) are generally within 100 m of reality
- Major canopy disturbers can be missed if flight timing does not coincide with an ephemeral disturber (e.g. tent caterpillars, frost damage, etc.)
- Not all parts of Minnesota are surveyed every year
- Pattern of damage can be scattered or clumped in any given polygon.
- Only new mortality is recorded.
- Not all parts of Minnesota are surveyed.
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
Polygons should generally be within 100 meters of actual problems. However, most of them were not ground-truthed.
