Title: Forest Health Survey 2017, Minnesota

Abstract: This dataset shows where largescale tree canopy damage was delineated in aerial surveys in 2017. Forests in northern and central Minnesota were surveyed (Flight Map). Forests south of northern Washington and Anoka counties were not surveyed. Only forest disturbances were mapped if they were occurring at the time of the flight. Flights occurred from late June to late August. The following were the most common disturbers, listed from largest area disturbed to smallest area disturbed: eastern larch beetle, spruce budworm, forest tent caterpillar, larch casebearer, aspen decline, shoot blight on northern white cedar, flooding, wind, jack pine budworm, black ash decline, twolined chestnut borer, hail, bark beetles on pines, and oak wilt. Not included in this dataset are unknown causes of damage.

Purpose: The purpose of this survey was to indicate where significant and highly noticeable tree damage occurred. Another purpose of this survey was to monitor general trends in forest health conditions (previous years' aerial survey data is available through the Forest Health unit of the MNDNR).

Spatial Extent of Data: The northern 2/3 of Minnesota was surveyed (Flight Map). Specifically, all or most of the forests in the following counties were surveyed: AITKIN, ANOKA, BECKER, BELTRAMI, BENTON, CARLTON, CASS, CHISAGO, CLEARWATER, CROW WING, HUBBARD, ISANTI, ITASCA, KANABEC, KOOCHICHING, LAKE, LAKE OF THE WOODS, MAHNOMEN, MARSHALL, MILLE LACS, MORRISON, OTTER TAIL, PENNINGTON, PINE, POLK, ROSEAU, SHERBURNE, ST. LOUIS, TODD, WADENA, WASHINGTON. Note that Cook County and northwest St. Louis County were not surveyed.

Section 2: Data Quality

Attribute Accuracy: Attribute table values are recorded in flight and double-checked afterward for any obvious errors and to ensure consistency. Some polygons were created from ground surveys after flights.

Logical Consistency:

Completeness: Caveats about this dataset:
- Many major forest problems cannot be identified from aircraft. For example, Armillaria root disease, white pine blister rust, and eastern dwarf mistletoe are not included in aerial surveys.
- Many concerning forest problems at low levels cannot be reliably seen from aircraft, such as oak wilt and emerald ash borer.
- Dutch elm disease is very common but not surveyed.
- Hardwood declines are extremely difficult to see and survey consistently. Decline data is not reliable.
- Most polygons are not ground-truthed.
- Affected locations (polygons) are generally within 100 m of reality
- Major canopy disturbers can be missed if flight timing does not coincide with an ephemeral disturber (e.g. tent caterpillars, frost damage, budworm defoliation, etc.).
- Major canopy disturbers can be missed if they lie farther away from flight transects. Flight transects generally go east-west and there are three to six miles between transects.
- Not all parts of Minnesota are surveyed every year.
- Pattern of damage can be scattered or clumped in any given polygon.
- Generally, only new mortality is recorded.
- Grid cells (boxes) are used to mark where certain disturbers are widespread and difficult to delineate (e.g. oak wilt). The attribute information in grid cells indicates how extensive the damage is.

Horizontal Positional Accuracy: Polygons should generally be within 100 meters of actual problems. However, most of them were not ground-truthed.
