Section 1: Overview

Originator:Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MNDNR) - Division of Forestry, Forest Health Unit and US Forest Service

Title: Forest Health Survey 2018, Minnesota

Abstract: This dataset shows where largescale tree canopy damage was delineated in aerial surveys in 2018. Forests in northern and central Minnesota were surveyed except northwestern St. Louis County and most of Koochiching County. Forests in Goodhue, Wabasha, Olmsted, Winona, Fillmore, and Houston counties were also surveyed. Only forest disturbances were mapped if they were occurring at the time of the flight. Oak wilt was not assessed. Flights occurred sporadically from early June to mid-October. The following were the most common disturbers, listed from largest area disturbed to smallest area disturbed: spruce budworm, eastern larch beetle, forest tent caterpillar, larch casebearer, abiotic cause of aspen decline, arborvitae leafminer, flooding, wind, emerald ash borer, twolined chestnut borer, heavy seed production on red maples, fire, bark beetles on pine, and jack pine budworm. Not included in this dataset are unknown causes of damage.

Purpose: The purpose of this survey was to indicate where significant and highly noticeable tree damage occurred. Another purpose of this survey was to monitor general trends in forest health conditions (previous years’ aerial survey data is available through the Forest Health unit of the MNDNR).

Time Period of Content Date:

Currentness Reference: 20180608-20181015 time period in which polygons were surveyed aerially

Spatial Extent of Data: The northern 1/2 of Minnesota was surveyed as was southeast Minnesota. Specifically, all or most of the forests in the following counties were surveyed: AITKIN, BECKER, BELTRAMI, BENTON, CARLTON, CASS, CLEARWATER, COOK, CROW WING, FILLMORE, GOODHUE, HOUSTON, HUBBARD, ISANTI, ITASCA, KANABEC, KOOCHICHING, LAKE, LAKE OF THE WOODS, MAHNOMEN, MARSHALL, MILLE LACS, OLMSTED, OTTER TAIL, PINE, POLK, ROSEAU, SHERBURNE, ST. LOUIS, TODD, WABASHA, WADENA, WINONA. Note that Cook County and northwest St. Louis County were not surveyed.

A map of Minnesota showing the results of the 2018 aerial forest health survey. Red polygons represent defoliation, black/gray polygons represent mortality, and orange polygons represent dieback and discoloration.

Associated Data Sets: - 2016 Forest Health Survey
- 2017 Forest Health Survey
- oak wilt confirmation points (not currently on Commons/GDRS/QuickLayers)
- emerald ash borer dataset

Section 2: Data Quality

Attribute Accuracy: Attribute table values are recorded in flight and double-checked afterward for any obvious errors and to ensure consistency. Some polygons were created from ground surveys after flights.

Logical Consistency:

Completeness: Caveats about this dataset:
- Many major forest problems cannot be identified from aircraft
- Many concerning forest problems at low levels cannot be reliably seen from aircraft
- Dutch elm disease is very common but not surveyed
- Hardwood declines are extremely difficult to see and survey consistently. Decline data is not reliable.
- Most polygons are not ground-truthed; Affected locations (polygons) are generally within 100 m of reality
- Major canopy disturbers can be missed if flight timing does not coincide with an ephemeral disturber (e.g. tent caterpillars, frost damage, budworm defoliation, etc.)
- Major canopy disturbers can be missed if they lie farther away from flight transects. Flight transects generally go east-west and there are three to six miles between transects
- Not all parts of Minnesota are surveyed every year
- Pattern of damage can be scattered or clumped in any given polygon
- Generally, only new mortality is recorde
- Grid cells (boxes) are used to mark where certain disturbers are widespread and difficult to delineate (e.g. oak wilt). The attribute information in grid cells indicates how extensive the damage is.

Horizontal Positional Accuracy: Polygons are generally within 100 meters of actual problems. However, most of them were not ground-truthed.
