Title:
Estimated Statewide Manure Nitrogen for land application by major watershed in Minnesota 2021
Abstract:
Manure nitrogen excretion was estimated for the state on a major watershed (HUC8) basis. Spatial data for all major livestock categories were acquired from the MPCA Feedlot Registration Database including Beef, Dairy, Swine, and Poultry (Turkey and Chickens). Registration values were assumed to be on the high-end of estimates since registration doesn't imply all feedlots are run at full capacity. NASS data on animal inventories were also used and were lower than registration numbers. Therefore, an average of MPCA registration numbers and NASS inventory numbers was used. Manure values were calculated for these animals using two methods. The first approach uses excretion coefficients and assumed storage losses while the second approach uses coefficients of expected nutrients found in stored manure; both methods focus on coefficients from the Nutrient and Manure Management tables from the UMN Extension. An average of the two approaches was then used to calculate manure nutrients assumed to be applied to the landscape after storage losses. That data was normalized using 2018 cultivated acres and a fertilizer density per cultivated acre was calculated.
