Title:
MBS Sites of Biodiversity Significance
Abstract:
This data layer represents areas with varying levels of native biodiversity that may contain high quality native plant communities, rare plants, rare animals, and/or animal aggregations. Initially, boundaries of sites are determined by review of aerial photography in order to identify potential areas of native biodiversity based on native vegetation. In subsequent field investigations, MBS assesses the ecological characteristics of the site and the presence of rare species. A biodiversity significance rank is assigned on the basis of the number of rare species, the quality of the native plant communities, size of the site, and context within the landscape. Following field investigations, site boundaries sometimes are revised, or sites added, to incorporate critical habitat for rare plants and rare animals. In these instances, the quality of native plant communities is not the primary criteria for ranking the site. MBS Sites that are found to be disturbed are retained in the layer as negative data and are given the Biodiversity Significance rank of "Below." Those disturbed areas within MBS Sites and all areas outside MBS Sites are lands where native plant communities have been seriously altered or destroyed by human activities such as farming, recent logging, draining, and development.
Purpose:
To track information on sites that have been surveyed by the Minnesota Biological Survey so that areas of statewide biodiversity significance can be given priority for preservation.

Attribute Accuracy:
Attribute values are subjected to a quality control process.
Logical Consistency:
Completeness:
Data are complete for each county represented in the data set.
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
No quantitative studies of horizontal positional accuracy exist for the data. Positional accuracy can be reasonably estimated based on the characteristics of source materials and processing techniques to be 45 - 60 feet (14 - 18 meters) from correct position.
Vertical Positional Accuracy:
Lineage:
The data is derived from a workflow process that also involves the creation of native plant communities within these site polygons.

| Outstanding | Sites containing the best occurrences of the rarest species, the most outstanding examples of the rarest native plant communities, and/or the largest, most intact functional landscapes. | |
| High | Sites containing very good quality occurrences of the rarest species, high-quality examples of rare native plant communities, and/or important functional landscapes. | |
| Moderate | Sites containing occurrences of rare species and/or moderately disturbed native plant communities, and/or landscapes that have a strong potential for recovery. | |
| Below | Sites below minimum biodiversity threshold for statewide significance. These sites lack occurrences of rare species or natural features or do not meet MBS standards for Outstanding, High, or Moderate rank. These sites may include areas of conservation value at the local level, such as habitat for native plants and animals, corridors for animal movements, buffers surrounding high quality natural areas, or areas with high potential for restoration of native habitat. | |
