| Abstract | All landscape-level forest resource planning and coordination is organized according to a schema of landscape regions. A diverse group of 50 stakeholders outlined six landscape regions, plus the prairie and metro regions that are mostly nonforest. Criteria followed in delineating the landscape regions were that the regions should be based on:
- broadly defined ecological units; - existing classification systems; - existing political and administrative boundaries; and - current planning processes. Each landscape has unique ecological, social and economic characteristics, best considered on a regional basis. Regional boundaries fall on county lines, following DNR Ecological Classification System (ECS) sections as closely as possible. | |||

| Associated Data Sets | County boundaries are based on the Minnesota County Boundaries layer maintained by the MN DNR. Three counties were split roughly along PLS Township boundaries to better align Landscape Region boundaries with ECS Sections: Beltrami, Morrison, and Polk. Beltrami County was split north/south roughly along PLSS Township line 150. Morrison County was split east/west roughly along the meander line of the Mississippi River. Polk County was split east/west roughly along Range line 42. Which version of the PLS Township boundaries was used to make the splits is unknown. | |||
