| Abstract | SSURGO Version 2 soils data is digital format Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) county soil survey information. It essentially captures the familiar County Soil Survey (produced by NRCS, formally SCS), in GIS format. It includes a variety of information on the physical and taxonomic charateristics of mapped soil bodies, as well as an assortment of interpretive information related to soil suitability for a variety of applications. The problem with SSURGO is that a detailed understanding of a complex database design is necessary to make full use of the data. The user must recognize that each soil delineation may contain multiple components with their own sets of information. Understanding what is truly going on inside of a soils polygon requires the user to summarize the information for each component, preferably based on the relative proportion of each component within the mapping unit. Also the data are extremely dense. An average county runs approximately 60 Mb. |

| Use Constraints | The USDA provides the following additional language:The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service, should be acknowledged as the data source in products derived from these data. This data set is not designed for use as a primary regulatory tool in permitting or citing decisions, but may be used as a reference source. This is public information and may be interpreted by organizations, agencies, units of government, or others based on needs; however, they are responsible for the appropriate application. Federal, State, or local regulatory bodies are not to reassign to the Natural Resources Conservation Service any authority for the decisions that they make. The Natural Resources Conservation Service will not perform any evaluations of these maps for purposes related solely to State or local regulatory programs. Photographic or digital enlargement of these maps to scales greater than at which they were originally mapped can cause misinterpretation of the data. If enlarged, maps do not show the small areas of contrasting soils that could have been shown at a larger scale. The depicted soil boundaries, interpretations, and analysis derived from them do not eliminate the need for on site sampling, testing, and detailed study of specific sites for intensive uses. Thus, these data and their interpretations are intended for planning purposes only. Digital data files are periodically updated. Files are dated, and users are responsible for obtaining the latest version of the data. |

| Purpose | SSURGO Version 2 depicts information about the kinds and distribution of soils on the landscape. The soil map and data used in the SSURGO product were prepared by soil scientists as part of the National Cooperative Soil Survey.
This particular product combines the county soil surveys into a single file geodatabase. The primary feature class contains an attribute table with fields for 16 of the most commonly requested soil properties. This allows for easy thematic mapping of these soil properties. The geodatabase also contains related tables and a set of relationship classes that allows for more detailed investigation of a particular soil map unit using the ArcMap info tool. Info tool results show up in the form of a tree that can be expanded to display the one-to-many relationship present between a soil map unit and the properties of the polygon. Finally, the attribute table also contains web links that connect to the NRCS website soil series description as well as the NRCS soil series extent map. |
