Section 1: Overview
Originator:Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MNDNR)
Title:
State Designated Trout Streams, Minnesota
Abstract:
This layer shows legally designated trout streams and trout stream tributaries as identified in Minnesota Rules Chapter 6264. See http://www.revisor.leg.state.mn.us/arule/6264/0050.html for legal descriptions and restrictions associated with designated trout waters.
This data set includes designated trout streams and their protected tributaries only. Users are encouraged to use the full resolution Stream Routes with Kittle Numbers and Mile Measures layer ( http://gisdata.mn.gov/dataset/water-measured-kittle-routes ) as a base layer to visualize all streams (designated and not) to fully understand hydrological connectivity and impacts to trout resources.
Designated segments are maintained as tabular data and displayed as linear events on the Stream Routes with Kittle Numbers and Mile Measures layer ( http://gisdata.mn.gov/dataset/water-measured-kittle-routes ).
Purpose:
To support land use planning, watershed management, timber harvest plans, and other natural resource management activities with impact on trout streams. Also supports recreational access to trout resources.

Logical Consistency:
Lines and nodes are verified and intersect where intended.
Completeness:
Data are completed for designated trout streams and protected tributaries statewide. However, this layer is still under review and subject to future revision. As of spring 2015, errors were noted due to changes in the PLS section layer. A large update effort has been underway to check the layer statewide so all errors can be corrected. Expected completion of the update process is summer of 2016. Please check https://www.revisor.mn.gov/rules/?id=6264.0050 target=_blank>https://www.revisor.mn.gov/rules/?id=6264.0050</a> for the legal designated trout stream list. The most recent updates were completed in 2020.

Lineage:
Original source of linear features is the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MNDOT) 1:24K Basemap features (circa 1980's). Many stream features have been re-digitized over time to match current air photos. However, feature accuracy is highly variable and may not accurately reflect real-world conditions.
Accuracy of original MNDOT Basemap features: Horizontal positional accuracy is highly variable. Rectilinear features are probably accurate to 55 feet (based on estimated production errors and a mean sum square estimation). Feature representation of sinuous streams is especially variable, with accuracies in the 55 foot range present in some areas, and non-systematic offsets (especially as coarse generalizations) present in other areas of up to 150 feet. Quality typically varies along 7 1/2 quandrangle borders, with the most significant and consistent offsets observed in the northeastern portion of the state, and the best representations found in Southern Minnesota.
