Phase 1 of the Atlas project, from fall 2016 to fall 2018, was supported by a direct appropriation from the Minnesota State Legislature to the Natural Resources Research Institute as part of the Minnesota Mining and Water Innovation Initiative.
Project maintenance was supported from the fall of 2018 to the fall of 2019 by the Department of Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation.
Phase 2 of the Atlas project, from fall 2019 to summer 2022 is being supported through a legislative appropriation of Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources unallocated funds.
