This data layer is the 2009 Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) summer orthophotography. It originated from the United States Geological Survey and includes the northern border near the BWCAW at a 0.3 meter resolution. Areas included cover much of the BWCAW, northeast St. Louis, northern Lake and Cook counties, and southern Ontario, Canada. Orthophotography is extremely useful for determining land use and land cover. As a result of this, it can provide important context for specific locations and other spatial data. If multiple years are available, it can also be used to identify changes that take place on the landscape.
