This data layer shows estimated Phosphorus Density (elemental pounds per cultivated acre) applied to the landscape from livestock Manure in Minnesota by HUC8 watershed in 2021. It was developed by the University of Minnesota. Livestock data were acquired from both the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency's Feedlot Registration Database and the National Agricultural Statistics Service data on animal inventories and includes beef, dairy, swine, and poultry. Manure values were calculated using two methods based on coefficients from the Nutrient and Manure Management tables from the UMN Extension. The final values were an average of the two methods, representing nutrients applied to the landscape after storage losses, and were normalized by the amount of cultivated acres in each watershed. Agriculture is an important economic activity in Minnesota. When not properly managed, excess nutrients from agriculture can enter surface and groundwater.
