This data layer indicates the locations of dams. It was developed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MN DNR) and includes all dams that require regulatory attention due to size or hazard criteria, those that were evaluated but did not meet those criteria, and those managed by the MN DNR. Dams serve a variety of purposes, including water level management, electricity production, and waste retention. Although these can be important economic activities, dams can have negative consequences for waterways. They alter the flow, temperature, and quality of the water and serve as barriers to migratory aquatic species.
