This data layer is estimated Groundwater Recharge. It was developed by the US Geological Survey. Groundwater recharge is a process where surface water and precipitation percolate down to subsurface aquifers. This recharge estimate has been developed by computer modeling that incorporates both physical data (e.g., land use, soils) and climatological data. Approximately 75% of Minnesotans get their water from aquifers below the surface. Understanding recharge patterns is vital to the proper management of these important resources.
