This data layer indicates the location of historic and active mine stockpiles associated with iron mining in the Mesabi and Cuyuna Iron Ranges. It was developed by the Natural Resources Research Institute by compiling data from multiple sources. It provides the locations of all known stockpiles associated with earth moving in the iron mining industry. Many of the stockpiles have good records of what type of materials they are composed of (glacial overburden, waste iron formation rock, lean ore, coarse tailings, etc.) and thus may be sources of materials for future industrial purposes.
