This data layer identifies lakes that have an active muskie (muskellunge) management plan, lake plan, muskie long-range plan, and/or where muskies are cited as a primary or secondary species. It was developed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Muskies prefer lakes with shallow water, a rocky bottom, and heavy cover. (Muskie rivers are not included in the data layer.) This data is used for resource management and research planning as well as recreational opportunity identification. Muskies are a premier game fish in Minnesota and provide unique, high quality opportunities for trophy fishing.
