This data layer is the Land Cover component of the 2016 National Land Cover Database (NLCD). It was developed by the Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics Consortium, a partnership of multiple federal agencies. The data is based on imagery from the Landsat satellites and is categorized into 15 classes at a 30 meter resolution. The NLCD provides information on land cover and land cover change during the period from 2001 to 2016. Land cover data provides valuable information on the distribution of different types of vegetation, agricultural activities, water, and human development. The patterns of these distributions and the changes that can be tracked by comparing different time periods, can provide guidance to natural resource managers and planners.
