This data layer displays the Minnesota Department of Agriculture's assessment of nitrate conditions at the township scale as part of the Township Testing Program. These initial results represent the percent of tested wells that exceed the drinking water standard for nitrate regardless of the potential source of nitrate. Nitrate-Nitrogen concentrations were measured in private drinking wells in townships that have high row crop productions or are vulnerable to groundwater contamination due to local soil types or geology. Initial results were compiled from homeowner-collected samples in 32,217 private wells in 344 townships from 2013 to 2019. The Health Risk Limit for Nitrate-Nitrogen in wells is 10 mg/L.
