This data layer is Sand Source data from the Soil Survey Geographic Database (SSURGO). It was developed by the Natural Resources Conservation Service. SSURGO contains information on soils collected by the National Cooperative Soil Survey over the course of a century. The likelihood of the presence of sand is indicated by this data using the three classes of good, fair, and poor. Sand is an important construction material that is used to make concrete, asphalt pavement, and other products. A sand source close to a facility that produces these products makes production more economical by reducing transportation costs.
