This data layer depicts Theme 4 of the 2020 Social Vulnerability Index (SVI). It was developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The SVI provides an indication of which communities are most likely to need assistance after a natural disaster or harmful human-caused event. Theme 4 is Housing and Transportation. It takes factors such as the type of housing lived in, how crowded it is, and vehicle ownership status into consideration. The index is based on a zero to one scale, with zero indicating areas with the lowest vulnerability and one indicating areas with the highest vulnerability. It is summarized at the US Census Tract level. The SVI may assist planners and project managers in identifying vulnerable communities. End users may prioritize highly vulnerable communities in grant programs and capacity-building projects.
