This data layer is a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) Hillshade with a resolution of 1 meter. It was developed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources using Lidardata. A DEM is a representation of the earth's topography. A Hillshade is black and white visualization of a DEM that uses a hypothetical light source from a specific direction (in this case from the Northwest) to help highlight the changes in elevation across the landscape. An accurate understanding of the topography of an area and the elevation of specific locations is vital to understanding the physical and biological processes that are occurring both on the landscape and in the atmosphere.
