This data layer identifies lakes and rivers with wild rice stands. It was developed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and helps guide wildlife habitat restoration and wild rice management. Wild rice is a nutritious food for wildlife and humans alike. Wild rice attracts many wild birds, especially waterfowl and red-winged blackbirds, and it also provides nesting cover for waterfowl. In addition, wild rice (manoomin) is sacred to the Ojibwe people who live in the Great Lakes region.
