Wild Rice – 1854 Treaty Authority

This data layer identifies the location of Wild Rice within the boundaries of the 1854 Treaty. It was developed by the 1854 Treaty Authority using the results of internal field surveys and observations and from the reports of other local, state, and federal agencies. It helps guide wildlife habitat restoration and wild rice management. Wild rice is a nutritious food for wildlife and humans alike. Wild rice attracts many wild birds, especially waterfowl and red-winged blackbirds, and it also provides nesting cover for waterfowl. In addition, wild rice (manoomin) is sacred to the Ojibwe people who live in the Great Lakes region.
